Het lijkt misschien alsof het voor docenten makkelijk is om uit te kiezen wat ze aantrekken, het is namelijk een informeel beroep. Dit wordt echter behoorlijk onderschat. Je hebt namelijk te maken met collega’s, schoolbestuur, ouders en leerlingen, en iedereen heeft een andere mening over wat gepast is, en wat onverzorgd of zelfs te uitdagend is.
Dit kan nog wel eens voor wat discussie zorgen. Kun je als juffrouw in zwart –wit jurken voor de klas verschijnen of moet de kledij effen zijn? Kun je als meester in een vrolijk T-shirt voor de dag komen of is dat te nonchalant?
Zelfs kleuren kunnen een punt van discussie zijn. Er zijn scholen die verwachten van hun medewerkers dat ze in een wit overhemd of witte lange jurken verschijnen. Dit soort kledingvoorschriften, die overigens vaak gelden voor zowel de leerkrachten als de docenten, zijn echter een uitzondering op de regel; de meeste scholen verwachten van hun docenten dat zij zelf de juiste inschatting kunnen maken over wat een gepaste kledingstijl is.
Voorbeeldfunctie
Je hebt natuurlijk als docent een voorbeeldfunctie, en zo zal je ook door ouders bejegend worden. Dit betekent gelukkig wel dat je nog steeds veel vrijheid hebt om invulling te geven aan dit begrip. Wat voor de één een veel te laag decolleté is, is voor de ander een uitdrukking van feminisme en een krachtige vrouw. Het is niet ongewoon dat dit een discussiepunt wordt, en elke school zal hierin zijn eigen beleid hanteren.
Verzorging
Vooral is het allerbelangrijkste in je kledingkeuze als docent dat je er verzorgd bijloopt. Zorg dat je kleren schoon zijn en dat er geen gaten of scheuren in zitten. Je bent een voorbeeld voor de leerlingen met wie je interacteert, en zij moeten nog leren hoe ze dit zelfstandig kunnen doen.
